Celebrities in the History of Shiatsu

Many celebrities were involved in the history of shiatsu therapy.

  • General Douglas MacArthur - In 1945, the MacArthur occupation government banned all traditional Japanese forms of medicine. The official reason given was that returning POWs told stories about being stuck with needles and burned with moxa when they fell ill.
  • Helen Keller - Helen Keller implored US president Truman to rescind the ban as many blind Shiatsu/Anma practitioners would have lost their livelihood.
  • Prime Minister Shigeru Yoshida of Japan - Tokujiro Namikoshi achieved fame in Japan after he successfully treated many high-ranking persons such as the former Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Yoshida and other prime ministers.
  • Prosecutor Keenan - of the International Military Tribunal for the Far East got treatment from Namikoshi.
  • Marilyn Monroe - In 1956, Tokujiro Namikoshi treated Marilyn Monroe seven times.
  • Muhammad Ali - In 1973, Muhammad Ali got treatment from Namikoshi.
